    Framed in a limed oak shadow box with lap jointed inner slip

    Original designs by Ashbee, one of the most important pioneers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, are rare.  Relatively little is known about  The Club other than the fact that it was founded by Gore, a Bristol vicar, with whom Ashbee had a close relationship.

    A similar motif appears on an architectural drawing by Ashbee in the collection of the RIBA (ref. PB246/9, Design for rebuilding of houses nos. 72-75, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, facing Embankment, 1897).
